Remembering Wolfgang

Wolfgang Wenzel
July 14, 1933 — July 29, 2017
Berlin, Germany - Rio Vista, CA

My husband Byron and I met Wolfgang in 1997 after we signed papers for our new home in Trilogy.   He and Hilde had just completed their final walk through of the same model.  They invited us in to see their new house which helped us with our final design decisions.  Wolfgang asked if I had ever played tennis. I had many years ago and he relentlessly encouraged me to get out there again.  I have always been thankful for that push!  Wolfgang and my husband shared many stories about Germany and we were honored to meet some of their German family members at their 50th Wedding Anniversary.  I will miss him and his "no nonsense attitude".  He was always happy to see you.

I have only great memories of WOLF.  He was a real gentleman, a friend and a collaborator.  He was a man of honor, integrity and commitment.  He was committed to the TRV tennis community and was active in the effort to get the two new courts.  May he rest in peace.

Wolf and I have been going to the same dentist here in Rio Vista, Dr. Gong.  One day Dr. Gong asked me if I knew Wolf since I had told him that I play tennis.  I said I did and Dr. Gong then remarked that it seems that no matter what the weather Wolf always wore shorts.

I have known Wolf for 16 years.  We met when I joined the Tennis Club here in Trilogy.  He was Vice President of the Club at the time, and a really good player.  I had never played tennis before and so of course I was extremely nervous getting started with these very good players.  But, Wolf and the rest were very encouraging and helpful.  We quickly became very good friends and enjoyed each other’s company, and the many, many hours of Tennis play for all those 16 years.  I also enjoyed socializing with Wolf & Hilde at our Tennis Club Social celebrations.  He was a very fine Man indeed.  We will miss him.

Wolf was a fine gentleman tennis player.  He never had anything negative to say about anyone.  He put up with all his body hurts every time he set foot on the courts.  We will miss him.

Remembering Wolf is easy. I played with him, or against him, countless times. It always impressed me his honest love of tennis, his enthusiasm and his sense of humor. He was an inspiration for me to realize his dedication to my favorite sport in spite of having two hip replacements!

One day, I cannot remember how it came to that, but it happened. Oh, yes, it must have been  because of the obvious difference of our height, that jokingly we started calling each other "The twins", which he used in translation by always calling me "little brother".

It was sad to see him missing days, until it finally became retirement from the Courts. Now I will remember his friendship and inspiration as I pray for his eternal rest.

What I remember most about Wolfgang is that he was such a gentleman on and off the tennis court.  When I was beginning to play tennis he always made me feel welcome, no matter how poorly I played!

I learned to play tennis here at Trilogy.  The first time I played in a tournament was at Rossmoor and Wolf was my partner.  I don’t recall the scores but we did not win.  I was a bit nervous but Wolf was calm, cool, and collected.  He was a perfect team player.  Wolf set the example for all of us.  He will be sorely missed.

I will remember three things about Wolf; he loved tennis, working out at the gym, sauerkraut and ribs. Aufwiedersehen, my friend!

Wolf and I went to the same Physical Therapist Curt Osuga, as do many Trilogy residents. Whenever I saw Curt, he would ask "how's Wolfgang?".  He told me that Wolf would order a special bread by the case and when he had an appointment with Curt, he would bring him a couple slices. When I told him of Wolf's passing, he was truly moved and said that he would really miss the "iron man".
